This outing follows our popular wildlife tour itinerary, but includes an opportunity to get out and stretch your legs as you breathe in the fresh mountain air. After an early morning of viewing wildlife in the spectacular Lamar Valley, we will take a mid-morning hike to round out the tour.
We suggest 1 of these popular hiking options for this outing:
TROUT LAKE LOOP
The Trout Lake Loop is a 1.2 mile (1.9km) mountain lake trail in the Northeastern portion of Yellowstone National Park. This trail has an elevation gain of about 150 feet (45.5m) as you traverse through a Douglas-fir forest to the lake. During the spring and summer months there is a variety of beautiful wildflowers to observe. From May through mid-July, this is an excellent location to view western cutthroat trout while they are spawning. As a result, the occasional river otter has been spotted as well.
DURATION
1-2 hours
YELLOWSTONE RIVER PICNIC TRAIL
This 3.7 mile (5.9km) trail climbs to the rim of the Yellowstone River valley. You will then hike along the rim where there will be sweeping views of the narrows of Yellowstone River, overhanging cliffs, and the rock towers of Tower Falls (no waterfall view from this location). Keep your eyes out for bighorn sheep, peregrine falcons, osprey, and the occasional black bear along this route. Also visible along this route will be the basalt columns of the river valley and a view of the historic Bannock Ford. This is the location where the Bannock Trail crosses the Yellowstone River. This crossing was once extensively used by Native Americans (from approximately 1840 to 1876) to access the buffalo plains east of the park from the Snake River plains in Idaho.
DURATION
2-3 hours
LOST LAKE TRAIL
This hike will take you to a picturesque mountain lake surrounded by sagebrush mountain hilltops. Enjoy seasonal wildflowers, waterfowl, the occasional beaver or black bear. Starting from the Roosevelt Lodge this loop trail climbs about 300 feet (91m) and covers 2.8 miles (4.5km). Along the route you will also have the opportunity to view the 40ft. (12m) Lost Creek Falls waterfall.
